Hello!

This is the personal homepage of Matti Ranta. I live in Vantaa, Finland, with my wife and our two kids. We also have a cat.

I do computer programming for living. When not working, I play with my kids, travel, or renovate our home. I read a lot, mostly non-fiction. I read content in the World Wide Web quite a bit, mostly technology blogs, Wikipedia and Hacker News. This is becoming a distraction, as I would like to read more books instead.

For large majority of my professional career I've worked for a company called ABB. Almost 10 years I was fully focused on R&D activities of MicroSCADA Pro product family.

MicroSCACA is a combined SCADA/DMS system from ABB, now owned by Hitachi. Check out the official product page for more info.

After that, I was invited to join a new team responsible for the company global design system.

My work is mostly implementation, but I work on UX/UI design as well. You can read a brief intro to design systems here. Unfortunately our design system is not public, but you can read a bit about it from this project brief by our partner.

I have graduated as M.Sc. on Information Technology from Tampere University of Technology.

It is now called Tampere University, after a merger of two universities and one polytechnic. It is a definite sign of getting old, when the universities you've graduated from, cease to exist.

Subsequently, I've graduated as M.Sc. in Economics and Business Administration from University of Vaasa. For both degrees, I did my thesis projects for ABB.

Unfortunately both are confidential. Title of the first thesis is Unbalanced network topology in DMS 600, and the abstract of the second thesis is publicly available. I have also supervised some thesis works in ABB.

I am lucky for having had a chance to live abroad short times for studies and work, first studying in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang (Malaysia), then working for Konecranes in Sydney (Australia) and most recently in Krakow (Poland) as an assignment for ABB.

Together with my wife, I own a small company called Variaabeli Oy. I do my freelancing work through this company.
